  • 2 pounds cube steak Choose uniform pieces for even cooking.
  • 1 medium yellow or white onion, diced Adds depth and sweetness.

  • 2 cups beef broth Low-sodium recommended for robust flavor.

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon salt Base seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper Base seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Optional seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Optional seasoning.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Optional seasoning.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds savory umami boost.

Thickening Agent

  • 1 tablespoon flour or cornstarch To thicken the sauce, optional step.

Optional Additions

  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup For a creamy sauce.
  • 1 cup sliced bell peppers Can add sweetness and color.
  • 1 cup diced carrots For additional sweetness.
  • 1 cup diced celery For aromatic depth.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Pat the cube steak dry with paper towels to promote better searing.
  • Season the cube steak generously on both sides with salt and black pepper, and additional seasonings if desired.
  • Optionally, brown the cube steak in a skillet over medium-high heat in a tablespoon of oil for 1-2 minutes on each side.

Cooking

  • Lightly spray the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Layer the diced onions at the bottom of the slow cooker.
  • Place the seasoned or browned cube steak on top of the onions.
  • Add sliced mushrooms and pour in beef broth, ensuring it covers at least half of the cube steak.
  • Set the slow cooker to low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours, until the cube steak is fork-tender.
  • If a thicker sauce is desired, create a slurry with flour or cornstarch and a few tablespoons of liquid, whisk and stir back into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes.

Serving

  • Let the slow cooker cube steak rest for a few minutes before serving.
  • Serve it with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, topped with the gravy.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or chives.

Notes

Browning the steak enhances flavor, but it's optional. Adjust the seasoning to your taste for custom variations.
