Ingredients
  

Cake Batter

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour or cake flour for a softer texture
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • red or pink gel food coloring optional

Buttercream Frosting

  • 2 cups unsalted butter softened
  • 5 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • pink or red gel food coloring for a romantic hue

Decorations

  • sprinkles or edible pearls for decoration
  • fondant hearts optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a heart-shaped cake pan or an 8-inch round and square cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • In another bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well.
  • Mix in vanilla extract, then alternate adding milk and dry ingredients until fully combined.
  • If using food coloring, add a few drops to achieve the desired pink or red hue.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • Cool cakes completely before decorating.
  • To make the frosting, beat butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, heavy cream, and vanilla extract.
  • Apply a crumb coat of frosting, then chill the cake for 30 minutes.
  • Decorate with rosettes, ombre frosting, or vintage piping as desired.
  • Add edible pearls, fondant hearts, or sprinkles for a finishing touch.

Notes

If you don’t have a heart-shaped cake pan, bake one round and one square cake, cut the round cake in half, and arrange the pieces with the square cake to form a heart.
