Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/2 inch rounds
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter Melted for the sauce
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt Plus more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest Optional for added brightness
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon Optional for warmth
  • to taste chopped pecans or mini marshmallows Optional toppings

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish or use a large oven-safe skillet.
  • In a wide skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Let it gently bubble for 1 to 2 minutes until smooth and syrupy.
  • Stir the sweet potato slices into the sauce to coat each piece. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring once or twice, just to start softening.

Baking

  • Transfer everything to your baking dish if needed. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring halfway, until the potatoes are tender and the sauce has thickened.
  • Taste and add a pinch more salt if needed. Optionally, fold in orange zest or stir in a splash of bourbon.

Notes

These sweet potatoes can be prepared ahead of time and reheated without losing texture. You can also add toppings like marshmallows or pecans for added flavor and texture.
